Michael Welch currently serves as the Chair of the Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District’s (LA-MSID) five-member, Board of Commissioners.
He was first elected in 2008 to the East County Water Control Board (ECWCD).
Welch is an 18-year resident of Lehigh Acres. Originally born and raised in Rhode Island, he graduated from Towson University in Baltimore with a BA in Political Science. During his college years he interned in the Capitol Hill Office of US Senator Charles Mac Mathias of Maryland. After university, he became a fleet manager for Buick Motor Division – General Motors Corporation in the Washington, DC area. In 1985, he was appointed by James Cardinal Hickey, Archbishop of Washington to study in Rome and received two post college degrees at the prestigious Pontifical University of St. Thomas (The Angelicum). While in Rome he was sent to Cape Town, South Africa for mission work during the apartheid regime.
In 1995, Welch was appointed legislative assistant and later senior legislative assistant to State Senator Tom Rossin. While working in the Florida Senate, he became actively involved with the East County Water Control District and helped on the Senator’s behalf usher in state funds for the Carlos Waterway project as well as other projects.
Welch is active in the construction and building industry and is currently managing partner of Building Industry Issues of Southwest Florida, LLC. In addition, he works has a consultant in business development and as a consultant for several businesses in Florida and in the Mid-Atlantic states. In addition to his other responsibilities, Mike was appointed Policy Director of the Lee Building Industry Association representing the thousands of construction related businesses and their employees in Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties.
Welch stated, “Since my moving to Lehigh Acres, it has become my home and I am proud of Lehigh’s greatest resource – its people.”
Mike is active in numerous professional organizations and charities since moving to our area including: the Lee Building Industry Association, The Board of Founders of Ave Maria University, and the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, Mike was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Park Royal Behavioral Health Hospital in Fort Myers. In 2014, Mike was awarded the honor of “Honorary Deputy” by Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott. Commissioner Welch was re-elected in 2012.
In November 2016 the electors of the District re-elected Commissioner Welch to a third term.
